In 2007, a group of
American Jews and Poles founded Friends of the Forum for the purpose
of fostering Polish-Jewish dialogue. The aim of the organization is
the strengthening of connections to both history and the future among
Polish and Jewish students and adults.
Friends of the Forum is a
U.S. based (501c3) non-profit organization that promotes
Polish-Jewish dialogue through educational programs, publications,
discussion forums, and exchange programs dedicated to Poles and Jews.
In concert with the Forum for Dialogue Among Nations and other NGOs,
it focuses on reconciling 800 years of Jewish history in Poland with
present-day dialogue. It builds bridges of memory over the gulf of
prejudice and stereotypes.
"Until I came to Poland
on a trip hosted by the Forum for Dialogue Among Nations, I never recognized how
much of my own Jewish history is connected to the country of my
ancestors. I came back from my first trip to Poland with a commitment
to connect Jews and Poles to the history and culture of Polish Jews
in the centuries before the Holocaust, and to create bridges for the
future."
Michael Rosenbaum,
Chairman of the Friends of the Forum, Chicago, IL "It is so important for
the future of interpersonal relationships between Poles and Jews that
they both see Poland as a country where Jews lived for hundreds of
years, creating a rich culture. This life was destroyed by six years
of horror in the Holocaust, as well as by the years under Communism.
However, Jewish life is becoming vibrant once again in Poland, and we
as Jews need to experience that positive energy."
Nancy Civin, Board Member
of the Friends of the Forum, Baltimore, MD "Prior to my initial
visit to Poland, I had only a very superficial understanding of the
deeply rooted and complex history of Jews with this country. Enhanced
understanding and dialogue, while at times painful and difficult, is
the only positive route to an improved future together for both Poles
and Jews. The Forum for Dialogue Among Nations facilitated my
engagement in Polish/Jewish relations and is vital to continuing the
important and improving connection that is evolving."
